Pygmalion's Art Tutorials: About Color Schemes

There are six basic color schemes, each of which play their part in creating a great image. It is important to know which color wheel you plan to use here because this will dictate your color choices when choosing a scheme.

It is often a good idea to start with a base color and then pick the colors that follow based upon the scheme you want to use. That choice will be based upon the mood or feeling you wish to create with your image or design. Some color schemes are more harmonious and some are more dynamic and tense.

For example, if you are to create an image of a character who is calm, healing and serene, you would choose a color palette which was more harmonious and blended easily. Where if you were to create an action image with a fighter character, a more dynamic and tense color scheme might be better depending on what you were trying to portray. Each scheme creates a feeling and a mood as well as the initial color you pick.
